I didn't register it and never had any issues in 2 years so far, I think the ecu did a good job on adjusting the new battery.
I didn't know it was advised to code a new battery for a bmw. I've replaced the battery in my e63 twice too and never had to do any programming so I thought the x1 would be just as easy being that is a much simpler vehicle.
