Going back over the years, you always had to have an FSC code. Even with my X3 going back 8 years a code was required. In those days there were people who would sell a lifetime code over the net.
The lifetime code hack (still needed the car's VIN) was soon negated by BMW who changed each map update software.
You could and still can get FSC Codes and maps for nothing from a website as follows:
https://mhhauto.com/ Having said that you now have to pay to join the site, so unless you are keeping the car for any length of time, it is not cost-effective.
