I do agree with you about 'M performance' model designation is purely marketing.
(I don't like M in front of my 240i. I wish they just call it 240, not M240)

However, I cannot agree that M performance models are what 'base model' used to be.

It's higher power engine offering from base model with mppk.
(X3 30i is base, 228/230 is base)

These M flavored models are closer to real M in terms of hp but nowhere near the suspension. That's where real M differentiates from other brands' performance cars.
