Aerodynamics and range. C/D testing shows an advantage of 10 miles and less consumption. Also they are really hub-caps and are removable. Upgrading to the 19 inch performance wheels further reduces range. Most owners I've seen either keep the hubs on or remove them, and most owners are coming from Prius' or other hybrids so styling/wheel design likely isn't too much of a priority.

Yeah the design on the left is much much better. Bigger wheels will reduce performance on any car but 18" to 18" is just fiiiine.
