It is a quiet road and there was a lot of rain and wind. Approaching the stop sign you're mostly focused on what if anything will come around the curve from the right and the tree fell from the woods on the left. Bad time, bad place for the M4, but the driver was probably within a second of death-by-tree.
Thanks for the description. Provides clarity - yes, puddles, ice and snow will slow you down. Glad he was able to bail before it was too late.
