BMW M fanboys are offended their luxury car is getting diluted and all about the badge contemplating their next moves to a Tesla. Real motoren werke's enthusiasts look at the engine, chassis and the raw potential across the board M included.

An M3 is, and will always be, an M3. You know what it is. And that's not changing.
I couldn't care less if regular 3 series owners get an M in front of their designation. Good for them if they care about badges. And good for BMW's pockets...
If you have driven an M3 and an M340i, the difference is still night and day. Which is why this is purely for marketing and should make non-M owners feel better about their purchase.
At the end of the day all of these cars are awesome.
