Not that I experience anything daily here in Australia's winter as you do, but I did recently go to New Zealand for an Alpine Snow and Ice xDrive Experience, where we drove a variety of xDrive cars on snow and ice tracks. This includes the X1-6 (inc X5M and X6M!) F30 xDrive wagons and a 7 series xDrive.
They're all very good but I was most amazed by the difference proper winter tyres made. BMW fitted Bridgestone snow/ice tyres to all models, and I was very impressed.
The X1 was very good, but not quite as balanced as the X3/4/5, I thought. But we were doing "spirited" driving, and it was the power of these that impressed more than straight out grip.
My 2 cents
