N57 was in production from 2008, but not sure exactly for what models/markets, etc. Easy way to tell is to look at you old engine, and see if the vacuum pump is located on the front of the engine. If it is there, it's an M57. If not, it'll be in the sump with the oil pump, and it's an N57.
EDIT: Yes, you may well be right; doesn't look like the 335d got the N57 until 2013 in the F-cars.
