I would also like to point people in the direction of the following blog that advises prospective buyers of these cars from July 2020 onwards:
Android Auto is now officially available on BMW models alongside CarPlay.

The moment a lot of people have been waiting for has finally come. Android Auto is going to be available for the entire BMW range starting this Summer. The German carmaker announced its plans to introduce the software on its models last year, but it looks like only cars made from July onwards will be lucky enough to get support for Android phones.

They include the models built atop the UKL platform, such as the X1 or the 2 Series Active Tourer/Gran Tourer, which are still not available with iDrive 7. Other than that, all cars using the latest iDrive will get support from July onwards.

From my point of view and coming from an engineering background, I always look at the small print and the English language statement made in these blogs and I am a little confused by the last sentence that I see as a CAVEAT (remembering that the latest X1 and X2 cars have iDrive 6) where it says:

How do other forum members read and interpret the words in the quote that I have copied from the blog?

Edited. The fall back position for anyone is available from Bimmertech called BMW Mirror Link Upgrade - BimmerTech SmartView HD Flex
I have posted the UK link below:

You might ask why I have posted this information! Well, it keeps all the relevant information including the move by BMW to fully integrate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto under this thread and also, I find myself in a position where I have ordered a UK spec F48 2020 xDrive 2.0i M Sport (with 10.25" display) and it has not gone in to build yet (as of Saturday 27th June 2020). The UK M Sport I have on order has -610 HUD, -6UP BMW Navigation Plus (Tech Pack II ZT2). Also -6CP with Apple Car Play with prep.
Thanks for info, in reply to your question — I read it as saying that cars with new iDrive 7 will get a software update enabling android from July.

I would certainly expect X1/X2 (and 1 and 2 series) in Europe wanting android to have to have to pay For CarPlay enabling (now android as well) as a build option. US will likely get it as std. The key phrase being ‘available” rather than Included.
