My X5 and 330e PHEV's reserve a small amount of charge. I suspect that the engine/charging software will continue to charge the battery at a rate which allows the rear electric motor to keep operating, even after battery charge has gone to "zero". When I put my mode selector to "Save", the battery will charge to three bars, while still allowing the electric motor to provide boost. When I am in full "e-power", the battery will discharge to one bar and then the engine starts, but the electric motor is still available for boost on accelleration. If the traction control system is calling for the rear electric motor, I'm quite sure that the flywheel generator will provide enough electricity to keep it running.
