It always depends on the circumstances, the stuff the detectives find out and that goes into the actual case. Like if you were to execute a robber, while there was no threat to your safety, point blank, in the back of the head, yeah, you should go to jail. But if you shoot a robber breaking in, not knowing their intentions and they are continuing, you are likely well justified. That's the kind of stuff they look at. The person that got their catalytic converter stolen may have assumed they could just drive off in a variety of reasonable scenarios and that wouldn't be trying to intentionally kill anyone. That the perp got killed in that process is too bad. Will other thieves think twice based on this story? Probably not, that's why they are thieves, they aren't thinking rationally to begin with.
