I use the alligator clip adapters too, and connect them to the jumper connection points under the hood.

Are you sure? The M3 Owner's Manual states on page 214 (Charging the battery) "Only charge the battery in the vehicle via the terminals in the engine compartment with the engine off. Connections, refer to Jump starting on page 217."
