Winter tyres give far greater security in severe winter conditions. Much better for stopping, which many forget is more important than getting moving.

Also remember while you are on winter tyres you are not wearing out the summer tyres, so tyre cost is similar long term. The cost is in rims, partly recovered if you sell on when you change your car, if they don't fit the next one.
Agree with you Pete, winter tyres are a one-off expense as they save wear on the summer tyres.

I was delivered run-flats with my car, and I'm not sure why but the service guys asked this and then implied I therefore need run-flats for the winter too. Which got put on yesterday by the way, just in time for another cold season probably.

And I only bought a V8 to help promote global warming, what's happening to that then?
