Yes, I think you are correct in saying the 8 speed auto is similar to the ZF box and I was told it was a joint development between BMW and Jaguar, but I think I read that the 20i auto was to be switched to the dual clutch 7 speed box that is manufactured by Getrag. It is the box fitted to my 18i auto and I have been very impressed by it to date and would say I prefer it to the 7 and 6 speed DSG boxes fitted to my two previous Audi Q3s.
