WHAT HAPPENS AT THE LE MANS TEST DAY AND WHO IS THERE?
May 29 2015 by WEC Staff

The green flag is being waved for the world's biggest sports car race, and the 56 entries who will be racing for glory on 13/14th June take to the track this weekend for the Le Mans 24 Hours official test day. But what happens and who can take part?

As a large part of the 13.62km track is made up of public roads, this is a rare opportunity for everyone to test cars, drivers and systems ahead of the big event in two weeks. Additionally, certain other teams who will not take part in the race are allowed to test to learn this unique layout for possible future participation. This is why there will be 64 cars on track on Sunday, 31st May.

It also allows the teams to set up home inside the circuit without having to move again before the blue riband event in the World Endurance Championship, the third round of the 2015 season.

Newcomers learn the ropes

The test day is only obligatory for new cars, with one model minimum per newcomer, plus teams and drivers who have never raced in the Le Mans 24 Hours - but everyone choses to attend. In addition, drivers who have never taken part in the race, or who have not been on the list of confirmed drivers since 2010, must cover at least 10 laps minimum during Sunday's track sessions. This is in addition to the simulator training they have had to do prior to the test day. The ACO reserves the right to refuse the entry of a driver if his/her performances or skills are not up to the mark.

Which cars will be there?

The cars allowed to take part are:
  • The two prototype categories in the Le Mans 24 Hours (LMP1 and LMP2), the two GTE categories (GTE Pro and GTE Am).
  • The LMP1s, LMP2s, GTE Pros and GTE Ams which are not invited to race in the 2015 Le Mans 24 Hours, but comply with the technical specifications of the 2015 World Endurance Championship.
  • Cars complying with LMP3 regulations (they are not, however, allowed to take part in the 2015 Le Mans 24 Hours).
  • Innovation cars (2 maximum)

What happens and when?

The public roads are closed to traffic very early on Sunday morning 31st May and will re-open around 19h30.

Scrutineering and administrative checks will take place on Friday 29th May (09h30-18h00) and Saturday 30th May (08h30-15h00) inside the circuit.

Free practice will be held on Sunday 31st May between 09h00-13h00 and 14h00-18h00.

The test day is open to the public. Spectators who wish to attend, but who don’t have general enclosure tickets for the Le Mans 24 Hours, can buy their test day ticket, which costs 20 euros (free for youngsters born after 1st June 1999) from the ticket booths at the circuit.

Note that it is possible to access the circuit on Friday 29th May. Spectators can walk down the pit lane and see the teams making their preparations for Sunday.
