I want to clean the evaporator coil... DIY?

My wifey's car has that foul dirty sock smell coming from the A/C vents and I have tried spraying disinfectants into the air inlet under the hood but this always turns out to be a short term fix and the smell always comes back. After doing some research, I am convinced that the evaporator core/coil is packed with mold and bacteria and the only way to permanently get rid of this unhealthy problem is to clean the coil directly with some kind of antibacterial cleaning foam. I have seen DIY guides for accessing the evaporator coil on other BMW models, but not the X3. I think the item is located somewhere behind the center console and there must be a way to get down there and spray some stuff directly in there. Any ideas???

BTW, my dealer is refusing to fix this, some crap about it being an environmental issue...

I guess I am on my own and I need your help!
