I tried to make some sense of this by looking at the X1 but failed.
Here is a 2018 X1 xDrive 20d M-sport with paddles and the ugly shifter:

(Edit: From the VIN the nice one is about two months newer and has a different type code.)
Also note that the X2, just like the X1, will come with either 7-speed DCT or 8-speed auto depending on engine.
