I think that delayed acceleration is more the transmission than the engine. I have a 228i M Sport with the 2.0 liter and ZF transmission and it has no lag at all. My wife has the X1 2.8 with essentially the same engine but the Aisin transmission, and the response is very different. Distinct lag from standing start or moving start.
