The 8AT shifts quickly. I think it's really nice, but haven't driven other BMWs.
My M-sport has shift paddles. Not sure what other trims come with that, but that could be harder to find.
X1s are/were the least expensive BMW when brand new, and probably that carries over to used vehicles. Aside from that, hatchbacks are not that popular, which might impact the pricing.
