Wouldn't say the 235i and 135i were identical. The 2 has a wider front track and stiffer springs by default. Plus had more power until the 1 facelift. Least most of the 1 series "cosmetic issues" have been addressed now, but the 2 series front lights are still (in my opinion) a lot better executed. If the 2 could give its front lights in exchange for the new 1 series tail lights, both would be sorted. The 5 door 1er is arguably far more practical as well - as is hatch vs sedan. I think it would have been hard for op to justify the M2 with 3 kids when he's already got an M. There isn't a massive amount of compromise in the decision with regards to performance vs practicality in that you'll still have loads of fun, but can actually carry people.
