If you are brand new to the track just put it in manual mode and leave it in one gear, say 4th (depending on the track). You need to concentrate more on what's going on outside the car than what's going on inside the car. Even with manual/smg equipped cars I always recommend new students get a lay of the land first then worry about shifting. When you finally hit the top of 3rd, 4th or 5th gear then you need to start worrying about shifting. In the mean time, concentrate on your braking, turn-in, apex, exits which are far more important. If you don't get those down your gear selection won't matter much because you just can't add speed to the equation.
