When I started driving 5-series back in the 1970's, the E12 was smaller than the current 3-series. In fact the wheel base was almost 3" shorter and the track almost 4" narrower. Width across the car (inside) was about 2.5" less than our current 3-series.

The F30 variants will be virtually E39 size, as the current car is only slightly smaller for many dimensions.

For me weight is the big issue, we are really getting bloated these days for kerb weight.
