Petrol or Diesel engine?
I found, when I had various Diesel engine cars, that if I used supermarket fuel it would blow out more smoke from the exhaust both when cold and on accelerating. It was actually rather embarrassing, but immediately noticeable how much difference there was on changing to proprietary brand fuel, which didn’t emit clouds of black smoke.
I haven’t seen any problem with petrol, although I’m currently using Shell V-power petrol to try and judge if that results in improved fuel consumption. As things stand, after a couple of tank fills, I’m not altogether convinced the additional cost at the pump is worth it.
