I purchase stocks by the principle "buy what you know" as well. I would modify it to be "buy what you know and you like, bonus if you can identify an audience (customers) that generally also likes it". I break this rule in a few exceptions, I will buy something I hate but believe it's audience likes it enough and will grow.
