There is some kind of wear-factor built in, 10k is just the default but it shortens it for harder driving. Mine has told me I needed one in between about 6 and 9 (plus those I added - I don't go more than 5k between, cause I'm paranoid and love shelling out money for peace of mind). OP should be due a change just by the date (yearly), unless he didn't get the maintenance plan (heard it isn't transferrable these days?)
And FWIW I'd always recommend a break-in change within the first 2k miles if you can; better-than-factory maintenance is also a great value-adder come sales time.
