My first car (1950 Ford flathead) had oil related problems. So did my second car (1960 Ford Falcon). Other than that, oil related problems are uncommon IME. I'll go with the manufacturer's recommendations. If you're paranoid (or use your car very hard) you can waste money on oil changes more often.
