Those in my X1 do have the advantage of the raised edges, but the downside I find is that small bits of grit etc find their way over the edge and gather around the base of the accelerator pedal. The upshot is that I regularly have to take them out and vacuum behind the pedal and also at the base of the foot rest by the front centre console. The mats are of a fairly stiff compound and from just having a look at the reverse of one of mine, it says they are manufactured from <TPE>. Wikipedia tells me that is a physical mix of polymers (usually a plastic and a rubber). Still better though than wearing out the factory fitted carpet mats!
The OEM carpets are indeed made of TPE, I bought them also.
But the problem with them is that they are very slippery.
I tried with a lot of shoes, but everyone of them slipped over the carpets face.
