You take the traction control off because you want maximum acceleration. In the rain or.. better even in the snow, go ahead and dump on the gas and you'll understand the disappointment. The traction control shuts all the power down and your car will stop spinning tires. So.. traction control off, and launch the @#$@#$ out of it. I have to say I've tried the launch control a few times and it's pretty good. Driving a manual car in the past really is hard to find the point where you smoke the tires and when you stall the car. A quick brake stand and punch on the gas is pretty good, but the launch control gets the rev's up higher so you get more torque and a better jump.

Oh and yeah.. it's pretty bad for your transmission, although I don't think we have too much torque on our little 4 bangers to grenade it. Multiple launches in a row will definitely hurt something though.
