It may have a small engine, but it also has an electric motor in the nose, and a spine made from Lithium Ion Batteries - knock those off and I'm sure you'd loose a couple of hundred kilo's - although the net effect would also be to raise the i8's (probable) very low centre of gravity.

edit: the more I think about it... the i8 has been built around it's drive train, using it as a base for a more conventional car would surely just end up compromising the finished product?
