I think you're right Bill.
What set me on the mudflap thing was, as I have mentioned elsewhere, I suffered quite a bit of stone chipping on my previous BMW, an E92 325i in Platinum Bronze.
During discussions with my dealership over that one, the question of painting the mudflaps cropped up, exactly for the reasons you have mentioned, light car, dark mudflaps.
The dealership provided them and fitted them, free of charge, but didn't recommend having them painted. Although they are quite rigid, the dealership had seen painted ones that started to lose their paint due to minor flexing.
But when they were fitted onto the Platinum Bronze 325, I actually quite liked them.
The only shot I can find of my 325, doesn't really show the mudflaps too well, but I think you can see that they don't look too obtrusive.
