BMW X1 drops some camo

Updated 4/14/14 with first Nurburgring spy video.

We bring you live looks at the 2016 X1 (F48) prototypes. The F48 recently began its testing in August-September 2013 and while still heavily camouflaged, the test mules reveal a brawnier and stockier look than the current E84 X1. Compared to the E84, the F48 X1 features a shorter front end, shortened overhangs and a taller and more upright greenhouse. While some may mistaken the E84 X1 for a larger wagon, there's no mistaking the upcoming F48 X1 as a compact SAV.

The F48 X1 will also make a departure from the current X1 by making the switch from RWD to FWD. It's been built on BMW's FWD "UKL" platform and should be offered in both FWD and AWD models. The UKL platform will also underpin the next 1 Series and is already underlies the just revealed MINIs.

Why the switch to FWD? Typically, FWD allows for better packaging, less costly production and more interior space. Unfortunately, it doesn't improve driving dynamics, so it remains to be seen just how well (or not) the next X1 drives compared to the first gen X1.

There are rumors that the X1 will be xDrive only in some markets, including for North America. Engines will range from 3 to 4 cylinders.

The new X1 may have its premier next Summer (2015), followed by an auto show debut in the Fall and a market launch in early 2016. It's rumored to be joined by a BMW X2 approximately one year later.

Enjoy the newest video and also some previous spy photos below.

It doesn't looks bad from the side, and it's more SAV than the actual model that looks more like and higher wagon.

Proportions look good, thats about all you can tell right now. I like that it looks more SAV like and less wagon like (like the current x1). As long as it comes in AWD, I don't mind the base model being FWD.

Playing for the cameras, you can see the driver constantly looking at the camera man.

Its a sportier looking little truck hence the dynamic roofline and rising glasshouse , whilst the outline changes , the design elements such as sculpture in the lower body , three dimensional character line and kicked up rear quarter light / hofmeister are carried over.
What will be of reference to many will be more modern features and interior space that has increased significantly. The dash is very X5 like providing surfaces and modern minimalism expanding the space in the cabin.

The look conforms to the new BMW X family - larger kidney grilles and aligned headlights.
In Europe the base BMW X1 will use the latest BMW three cylinder engine , an M badged X1 is in development to take advantage of further growth of high performance compact SUVs .

The BMW X1 will also spawn an inevitable BMW X2 Sport Activity Coupe aimed at customers that want an sporting SUV but without the need for greater utility.

Not bad, but there goes the dash to axle ratio that has distinguished BMWs so nicely. Many people won't notice or care, but the faithful will see these cars and know they have FWD origins. Audi has some nice designs, but even their best betray their FWD heritage.

I'm sorry but BMW has become to be known as boring motor works. This is what happens when you try to sell in volume. So sad.

It's going to have everything to do with how xDrive is set up.

Like it so far. Though FWD would not be for me. Maybe a family car, wife's car....

I'm glad I got the E84 xdrive n20 for my wife. Just not a fan of fwd. even the xdrive will be front biased...kind of like the ford escape.

I like the proportions, and I cannot quite fall for the current X1, so I hope you're right; it'd be a shame for it to become style over substance.

It's interesting to see if BMW can have the driving dynamics of this new model on par with the actual model
