X2 M35i Winter Tires

Hi, I'm about to buy a Misano Blue X2 M35i with 20" wheels. My only reservation is the tires. I'll occasionally use it for winter ski trips (my Rivian will be my usual ski car) and although the M35i is AWD, it gets mixed/bad reviews for winter driving. I live in CA so day to day do not need anything special.

Those who live in cold climates, what are you doing for the winter? I'm not particularly interested in dropping another 3k+ on a set of wheels and tires and swapping them out seasonally. For one, seems like the large brakes limit wheel options. Would prefer to get good all-season M+S tires and call it a day. I'd carry auto socks instead of chains in the mountains.

Unfortunately, I don't see any replacements in the standard 225/40/r20 size. Would a 235/40/r20 tire, which offers a lot more options, work? Any others people have found that provide decent performance year-round?

Yes for the size.. and Michelin cross climate 2 are the supposedly go to for here all season. I switch my tires for winters and it's just as good as all my other awd cars in the snow.

Awesome. Thanks.

Was thinking also of the Vredestein Quatrac Pro, which is 3PMSF rated and comes in 245/35/20 or 235/45/20.

Never heard anything about those. The CC2 are all weather tires vs all season tires. In Canada it's popular but I find in the USA it is not. That's the difference between the tires. Many in East Coast here says that the CC2 is so good they might never bother switching to winter tires if they didn't have that option. The tires do make a big difference.. the hakkapelitas for example were the best best I've ever had for winter, but very expensive.

Lol, don't think I ever even knew there was a difference between all weather and all season before your post forced me to confront my ignorance!

But looks like the CC2 are a great option, and 235/45/20 shouldn't be a problem per willtheyfit.

I went with 18 x 8 wheels from Tirerack and 225/50R-18 BRIDGESTONE BLIZZAK WS90 SL. I have run them in some serious winter conditions (ski trips to VT) without a problem. Of course the 18" wheels change the look of the vehicle a bit, but they are only on for a couple months.

I live in Colorado and would say the car works great in the snow. If your looking for snow tire there are two catorgories of snow tires 1) Nokian 2) everything else. I you have Nokian tires and the front lsd, the car out perform just about any other car on the road. I think most people just do not know how to drive in the snow. The Nokian tires really make a huge difference they even transformed my E60 M5 on the snow.

I'm also in SF area and plan to go up to Tahoe for ski season. Currently have the stock Continental ProContact TX SSR all season tires. They have the M+S designation on the sidewall so I plan to use these and carry snow chains. I'd be interested to hear what you go with!

So went to look at the CC2 after driving in the last storm with my tires from the dealership, no bueno! Of course, my tires size are 225 45 R19 and it appears that the CC2's don't fit. Anyone have any suggestions for a great all weather tire for my 2022 X2 m35i.

What do you mean they do not fit? If you are in Boston, contact Jay @ Boston mobile tire and he'll get you setup right. Yes it's a plug for someone I know and have used many times. Very good service as he can order/pickup and come to your location to mount and balance tires with all top notch equipment.

I still say if you aren't going to use dedicated snow tires, you need something like the CC2's. I think they might have dropped the "all weather" rating and back to all season, but there is a big difference in the quality of rubber for the snow.

Thanks for the plug! I don't know much about tires, but that's what the stock continentals size is 225/45R19 and according Michelin they don't come in that size. I will call your guy and sees what he says.

Can you go wider and they still work with my rims? I am clueless on this! So thanks for the patience!

Update: This might not be super helpful for the original post, but just wanted to share my recent experience. I drove through some post-blizzard conditions where chain control was being enforced, but because the m35i is awd and the tires are rated for mud and snow (original tires) I did not need to use chains... nor did I notice any slipping. I also tried driving around during the blizzard and did not slip unless I intentially tried to break traction. Goes to show that the driving style is much more important than tires (unless you're trying to drive through the snow in summer tires).

Not sure, maybe a tire guy can come in. 245 is 20mm wider so it's about 1/2" wider?

235/45/19 is available in the CC2. It would be a better fit and I'm sure the wheel can handle the less than 1/2" wider tire. I was going to order the CC2 in this size for my X2 but there was a sale going on for the All Season Pilot Sport 4 tires. I went and got a dedicated 18" winter setup.

I would say almost certainly 245 can fit.. the only thing I can't comment is the stock rim offset might be close. I'm running spacers and there's tons of room. My old winter tires were actually 255 but again the offset of the wheels were less. Easiest way is to stick your head in there and see if you can fit 10mm closer to the strut which I bet you can.

I can confirm 245/45/19 will fit without clearance issues (in full range of driving from steering wheel lock to bumps/potholes).
I put these on the stock 19" wheel to get more sidewall- Using Nokian ONE for my summer tire.
For winter i have a set of 18s with Blizzak 215/55/18 (again, i want more sidewall) I wish the Hakkapeliitta's were made in this size because i want tall and narrow - but no luck.

As for performance in snow/ice? the M35 drives great with good tires. I live in Breckenridge and commute on I70 to denver occasionally. and live on a County road that is not a high priority for plowing. I've had snow over the hood and i'm still able to get up the hill and in my driveway. I also do the ice racing on Georgetown lake with the Blizzaks - it does well!

Just put my all seasons back on and the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 tires are already down to 5/32 and 4/32 with only 27k miles on them. I did get an alignment when I got the tires.

The winters only have 8k miles and still at 9/32 and 10/32 so they'll last awhile.

Of course my TPMS reset got all the way to 99% then went back to nothing. Now every time I try to reset it, it quits anywhere between 8%-32%.

Guessing maybe a battery in one of the sensors is getting old? Was really hoping to get one more summer out of these all season tires.

Might break down and get the CrossClimate2s in 235/45/19 and new TPMS now instead of next year. smh
