Most FWD cars have a transverse engine and laterally mounted tranny, or at least a transverse tranny. Adding a coupling to an AWD differential to the rear can compliment the FWD into an AWD capability. RWD cars with a front engine forcibly have a longitudinally mounted (i.e. inline) engine configuration. Some AWD cars like the Audi S4 have an inline engine and a funny tranny that splits the torque and sends part of it to the rear wheels and more than 50% to the front. BMW x-drive has a RWD configuration with a longitudinal engine and tranny and a strong rear differential carrying 100% or down to 50% torque during AWD operation; and an added FWD torque assuming diff added near the transmission, sending spin to the front wheels. In this new X1, the mechanical performance should be similar to the family sized Cooper cars that look like SUVs, due to the shared engineering. Also, for people who drive slow enough to not coax understeer or oversteer, the new X1 will feel not so different to the outgoing X1. Folks who are more aggressive drivers will reach the limit in turn in, or out of a turn and will sense the understeer in the FWD design (most FWD cars have a transverse engine). I am unsure if the new X1 will offer AWD initially. In any case, the X1 will be more fuel efficient, easier and cheaper to build and less costly to repair. The trade off is the new X1 will feel like an Audi instead of a BMW, when pushed hard. |

Except for its FWD overhang, it sure is pretty. No doubt about that.
Drivetrain is all wrong, though.

E84 looks so much better....the new one looks like a Honda in profile...the old X1 looked more like a Touring, and the world needs more touring wagons rather than just another generic SUV.

Nice interior but still love the long front of the old X1.
The old was love at first eye and just what to marry with it. The new i think it will be just a "ride"... |

Amazing, how a subtle makeover of details, can transform an ugly duckling into a thing which is pleasant to the eye. The exterior is a fantastic step forward in overall design and yet manages to stay unmistakeably an "X1".
The interior, though, looks terrible by comparison. Many have criticized the shifter and I will only add to that. Why go the "rugged Off-roader" way in a car that is FWD? This is no Wrangler competitor. And never will be. So why on earth push the interior away from the usual BMW premium design? Why put a lever that looks like it was taken straight from a school bus? And then there's the drivetrain? Why FWD? If BMW becomes Audi, why choose BMW? Not for the interior for sure?

Personally I like the new design better. To me it looks more modern and aggressive. Of course, everyone has different tastes.
I especially like the fact that you can get the F48 X1 with a built-in HUD. Whenever I have a loaner BMW I really miss the HUD. I don't think the current E84 offers a HUD? I like the higher placement and larger size of the nav screen, although it seems like the Germans have collectively decided to make it look like someone super-glued an iPad to the top of the dash (Mercedes does the same thing). The shifter is pretty odd. Is that a manual transmission? I heard they'll offer a manual in markets outside North America, alongside with a few other engine choices. BTW, the way BMW automatic shifters work is weird. Push forward to go into Reverse? Pull the lever toward the back of the car to put it in Drive (forward)? Bizarre.

No 35i engine, no rear biased AWD, no hydraulic steering
As for the new F48, my title says it all. Go buy a Mini Countryman. This is like the old Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable days. Same platform, same engines but different shells and interior.

I'm curious, why the big fuss with performance on the old or new X1 or if its FWD or RWD bias?
The X1 is small AWD jacked up station wagon for god sake. Who cares if its .5 seconds faster or slower? Its not like you can drag race it from every stop light or pull 1.0g with every corner. If you want to drive a real sporty vehicle, BMW makes a bunch of them to fill that purpose. |

Not to mention you can't even get power seats on the Countryman, price the two out and I bet the F48 X1 comes out cheaper when comparably equipped.

That post is clearly talking about the current Countryman if you're being told to go buy one. The F60 Countryman is still 2 years out.

But to the point, this will be the first time you can buy a Mini and a BMW that are essentially identical aside from body panels. At least there's a chance the Mini will have a three pedal option. Aha, BMW blog says it will be at Paris next year with EU deliveries in Sept and US to follow by EOY. So yeah, you won't exactly be able to run out and buy one for eighteenish months. |

Everything I've seen on the F60 so far is a 2018 model year vehicle. This lines up with the 2015 R60 receiving the LCI which typically lasts 3 model years before the replacement model.
I had an R60 ordered with a July 2015 delivery but switched to the F31 since it didn't make sense to buy it so close to the F48 release. After getting the pricing on the F48, I'm so glad I didn't because it's such a better deal then the current R60 even if it can't be had with 3 pedals, the Aisin should be good enough. The F45 2er Active Tourer and the F55 Cooper 5 door probably fit the bill as the first BMW and Mini to be essentially identical except for body panels.
