I think this next generation of BMWs will lag Mercedes and Jaguar in interior quality. I don't see any stitching in these shots, just plastic.
The rest of the car looks pretty bland too but there's only so much you can do with an SUV. Nonetheless it's not a looker like the Macan or the Evoque.

Having spent 48 hours with a 2AT, the new X1 is a rip off.
But it's the same platform so no wonder. But the seats, the dash it's all 2AT. The engines as well i belive. As a owner of the current X1, i think what we've seeing so far steps in the right direction. As the current E84 is very cheap inside (materials) the 2AT is a massive step up, so will the new X1 be. The seats are worse than the E9* sportseats that's in the E84 now though.

Sure, there's a lot plastic, but nothing new when we talking about BMW interiors. At least, the design looks quite good so far, like it more than the 1 and 3 series interior designs (currently probably the ugliest BMW interiors for me).

If they would bring it to the US with a manual transmission I'd buy one immediately to replace my Subaru. It would be a perfect utility companion to my Sports Car and Sports Coupe. I can't imagine that they will, but the photo has allowed me to dream.

Why
It is tough to understand why anyone is getting excited about the new X1. Look at what current owners and prospects are losing. No more RWD or AWD with rear bias. No more hydraulic steering with good feedback. No more N55 6cylinder engine considered one of the best ever built. Folks, we are getting a rebadged, neutered Mini Cooper countryman cousin. Current X1 owners should rejoice since we have one of the last great BMWs built based on E90 with hydraulic steering and rear biased AWD. Plus current gen X1 has a unique look - like it or not.
I would be surprised that despite updates if BMW does not charge $50K for one well optioned one. Time to look at the upcoming VW Golf R and R400. Yes AWD with front bias but the value propositionis better. |
