I think it's been said before, but just check your tyre pressures before you do anything -- if you've not already done so! In my experience, dealers are not averse to adding 10psi to the recommended inflation pressure, and that's a big problem when you have low profile RFTs fitted.
My car was delivered with between 42 and 44 psi ....insanity!!

I don't find the standard seat are uncomfortable even after an eleven hour drive. That being said if at the time if I could I would have ordered sport seats.

Same here. I'd go for sport seats next time for their bigger side bolsters. But haven't had any issues with my standard seats.

That's encouraging to hear Ando and KPD. I didn't upgrade to Sports seats either for my 20d xLine although I went for 18" alloys and EDC so hopefully will be comfy enough. He comments above have worried me a bit but I hope to find out in 2/3 weeks time. Test drove a 25d xLine with 19" alloys with standard seats and no EDC which was really uncomfortable.

I have 20i xLine with 18" 566 alloys, non-runflat tyres, Dynamic Damper Control, Seat Adjustm., Electr. W. Memory, Lumbar Support Driver/front Passenger and Standard Seats. I have not done more than 4 hours driving in a single day but have to say I am more than happy with the standard seats.

I have 19" run flat with sport seats.
Previously I had F30 (3 series), 17" RFT, no sport seats. No adaptive suspension in both. The F30 is way comfortable compared to the the X1 as the ride is less stiff. This is noticeable in long rides (more than one hour), But ! The X1 wheels is much nicer this way and the ride is much fun ! I do not regret it |

Good to see everyone's experience and opinions. I finally went on a long test drive today, in car with 18" non run-flats, sports seats and std suspension - seemed more comfortable, as expected, but by the time I got out my back still ached a bit so I'm beginning to wonder if it might be me rather than the car, I don't think the seats are the problem in my case, I had a bit of time hanging around in the showroom waiting to get the test car ready and was able to compare sport and std seats. Essentially both seats have exactly the same basic geometry and hardness in the base and the back, so should be equally comfortable, providing that is that you have relatively short legs, as I do, and you don't drive very rapidly on twisty roads. So I've decided to keep the car at least a few more months, and then consider buying some new wheels, or changing the car. At the moment X1s seem in short supply, so the only suitable alternative the dealer could offer at the moment, without ordering from the factory would have been an extra £8k - too much if I'm not sure it'll solve the problem. The salespeople I spoke to didn't seem to acknowledge the problem with 19" wheels + runflat, although as someone mentioned it's widely reported.

I have experienced pain in the right knee due to the seating positions after going on a longer drive. I tried different combinations by adjusting the height and other settings but could not find a comfortable position and I might have to buy an extra car cushion to increase the height of the seat. I was used to sitting at a higher position than the maximum height on the new X1. Not sure if the cushion can fix the problem but my knee really hurts in the current setup.

There are several things that you could consider to increase the seating height and cushioning. 1 Replace the standard seats with the sport seats. 2 Get an upholsterer to modify the seat base by adding a spacer plate under the seat frame to raise it, and have the front swab/bolster of the seat made deeper and/or longer. |

Picked up my car yesterday. Including leather sport seats, sport steering wheel with paddles, dynamic damper control, 511 19 inch wheels with Bridgestone Potenza (S001).
About the comfort/noise. During my testdrive (Xdrive) in February the car was noisy and not feeling comfortable at all. Don't know what happen but things have certainly changed. First impression: Very comfortable, quiet and oh so nice to drive. I think due to the DDC and the leather seats. My big worry about the comfort with the 19 inch wheels disappeared. Don't have to change wheels...pffff! A happy owner here. |

Nor is the price when you compare the X1 to the far more expensive X5, 5 series etc
You have to consider that it is built to a price to compete in a market segment. If it had the best seats, transmission etc, why would anyone buy the more expensive BMW models. Yes, the Gearbox in the X1 is not as smooth or dynamic as the 125i F20, and the seats are a little small for larger bodies, but for me (average size) overall it is a really good package. I am sure that the all the comments find their way to the relevant teams within BMW, so time will tell. The good thing is most items like seats can be fixed to suit the individual. |

...and the Aisin transmission, while not as good as the ZF employed elsewhere in the BMW range, is still far better than the DSG transmissions employed by Audi/VW, and M-B. I'm surprised people think the seats are "smaller" than the sports seats in other BMWs. They seem larger to me than those in my F20 M135i. Maybe it is the shape?!

I mentioned the seats to my wife when I first saw this post.
Last night when she came in from work the first thing she said was..... Christian says, "If it's uncomfortable come down to the factory and we'll mould a custom cushion" Turns out she mentioned it to a friend at work who's husband works for Red Bull at Milton Keynes and the Christian is Mr Horner himself. I've been promised a factory tour for some time now, and I've been invited down at the end of the year after the current season ends. Now about that carbon fibre mobility scooter Mr Horner.............. |
