Who buys a vehicle like X1 for any driving dynamics? Excatly, therefore it being FWD should be a non factor for potential buyers...at least for vast majority. If you're on here complaining about any driving dynamic then I lost faith in humanity.

I think you are wrong. When I drive my brother's Isuzu trooper, I hated it. I also drove the first generation Santafe, which is horrible....but when I frist drove the e53 x5 with a manual transmission, I was shocked at how stable it was. I currently own a 4.8is and it handles curves and high speed very very well.

Those classic FWD proportions, with the front axle as far back as humanly possible.

Sad.

Like I said you are in the minority here. Most people with X1s are soccer moms or high school girls.

With those tiny little wheels I wouldn't hold your breath. All X cars have these disproportional wheels for the size of the car.

Not to mention the Evogue is compared to the X3.

I kinda agree with you. And I lose faith in humanity one person at a time on a daily basis....having said that, I think this X1 might look pretty good once we can actually see it and light design isn't F'd up. The overall shape and proportions are nice.

+1, WTH is going on? Everything is upside down, up is down, down is up, I seem to like the direction of MB over BMW design? I blame the magnetic polar shift cuz I would buy this car as a daily commuter/family mover! Yes I know it looks like a premium version of a Toyota Matrix but I like hatches.

Seems there is a new painting for the upcoming X1 in a similar color to Montego Blue and San Marino.

So it's supposed to look 'sportier' than the current X1, and backs up these sporting credentials with a FWD base model and crappy F-series guess-o-matic steering?

Slow clap

With the existing X1 35i offering up 300hp and competition from Mercedes with the GLA45, Audi with the Q3 RS (and in theory a 2.0L 4 cylinder ~300hp Q3 S too - though they have opted not to build one so far), and others I have to believe that BMW is planning to offer at least 300hp for the F48 as well.

So this really has me wondering what will power such a vehicle. I think a transverse B58 I6 (or any other I6) can be all but completely ruled out. So that leaves us just with I4. Obviously BMW knows how to get 150hp+ per liter since the B38 in the i8 hits that mark, but that is a "special" engine and so far they have not gone near there with the 2.0L I4 since (240hp is the most from N20). Older rumors claimed a targeted maximum of 133hp/L for the B48, but 266hp seems unlikely to cut it.

So when will BMW get in on the 300hp I4 club?

There'll be nothing above 28i (B48B20O0) at introduction. The will be a GLA45 competitor from BMW when M GmbH picks F48 up, which is never.

I hope xDrive will be more RWD than FWD because our X1 18d xDrive is truly fun to drive in the snow...

As it was with the current E84. But over the seven year lifespan of the car, I think we are going to see BMW make a move. And not just for this vehicle but any BMW-branded UKL vehicle for which a performance variant could be a compelling offering.

Well, I try not to let the marketing folks have too much say in telling me how to evaluate the products they are trying to push. I agree that BMW currently has no obvious answer for the AMG M133, but when you look at performance, the M135i is not far off the A45 at all despite being down quite a bit on power. Same story for the ~300hp S3, though obviously they have the new RS3 coming to provide heavy hitting. For the Q3 RS though, let's face it: Audi really isn't trying hard at all with a paltry 310hp vs. the 380hp TT RS and even more possible in the next RS3. Point here is, I think that the current X1 35i could hold its own against the GLA45 if we were to match them up. So then, I don't really see an M-proper product as an absolute necessity here, at least not right now. But, a 300hp M Performance offering of some type is an obvious choice for BMW. They aren't just going to sit idly while Audi and Mercedes push them around. Even Mercedes is rumored to have higher powered non-AMG coming for the FWD cars, and not just 240hp-ish M270 as seen in the new C300.

So I think BMW will build a 300hp I4 powered car this decade - maybe even sooner than we all think.

It is a delicious dish!

X1M?

Was unavoidable that BMW did not participate in the segment of high-performance SUV lights?

Whether you have an engine with 4 cylinder or 6 the war for the glory of the performance is declared.

Ladies and gentleman!
Audi Q3RS vs Porsche Macan Turbo vs Mercedes GLA45AMG vs coming X1M.

It depends on how the market pans out. But next for growth will downsized Performance SUVs for the compact/ sub-compact segment.
We are already seeing some competitors move forward with challengers here.

I recently won a bet from around 10 years ago when I said Porsche will have a mid-size SUV in that 10 years. And have a new bet that there will be a compact Porsche SUV by the end of this decade.

Many at BMW reckon it will be time for BMW X1M to provide high performance in this segment. Early design work has commenced with some proposals using the widened arches of the M235i Racer. For BMW X1 M to exist it will possibly share engine with the upcoming M2. But will be available in xDrive only.

A decision won't be made until the F48 has launched in 2015.

One such vehicle decided will be X1s sister car the MINI Countryman which will come in a full JCW model as MINI move forward to implement JCW on certain models Allowing a BMW M type of exclusivity to JCW.
