Lightbulb 2016 BMW X1 (F48) Prototype Gets Brawnier

For Americans, who only received the current X1 last year, it may seem way early to see a next gen X1 prototype, but here it is. As the current X1 has been in production in Europe since 2009, the next generation model should come in 2015-2016.

On the outside, the F48 X1 adopts a brawnier and stockier look, owing to a significantly shorter front end, shortened overhangs, and a taller and more upright greenhouse.

The next X1 will make the switch from RWD to FWD by riding on BMW's FWD "UKL" platform, which will also underpin the next 1 Series and MINIs. However, like the current X1, the next generation model should also be offered with AWD transmission. The switch to FWD will allow for better packaging, less costly production and more interior space.

BMW puts too small of wheels on the X1. Period. I hated the car until we upgraded the wheels.

We went one sidewall size larger when upgrading to 19" rims and we are regularly asked about the X1. Beforehand, no one gave a crap. Where we should've put 30/35 sidewall tires, we went with 35/40, and what a difference!

275/35/19 rear and 245/40/19 front was the ticket. No rubbing and looks sensational on Avant Garde M355 19x9/19x10's. It also handles great and feels crazy planted.

BMW, you've lost your way in the relentless pursuit of market expansion. Careful, lest ye dilute your reputation beyond repair (and I agree with many enthusiasts that peddling FWD cars is a good way to guarantee just that result).

It looks ok, we must wait and see how it turns out without the camo. The side profile is nicer than the current X1.

It's fully camo'd, we don't know what the final product will look like yet.

I like the current X1 a lot and am even considering one for my next car when I'll need something bigger. I'm not sure how I feel about this new one being FWD-based though. I'd probably get the AWD one anyway, but how is xDrive going to work in this case then? Will it be AWD with a transverse-mounted engine?

I agree with you 100% but they do that with all their X cars. The new X5 is the worst case with tiny wheels. But in doing what you did doesn't that affect the speedo?

I gotta agree.. the shape looks great.

But I the fact that this is will be FWD has lost me.

Perhaps if the AWD isn't FWD biased, I could consider it again.
