Would like to see a comparison between the BMW X1 and the Mercedes GLC.
Supposedly GLC is from another segment and should be compared to X3 but since X1 is so close to the existing X3 I wonder if it could get close or even beat GLC is some points. Personally I choose X1 over GLC. GLC exterior design is too conservative and somewhat tasteless and drives too much like a tank to my taste. |

Have you driven one? The ride and handling are both pretty good, IMO. Ride, in particular, is better than the X1 due to the longer wheelbase. That said, while the GLC is "bigger", it's much less space efficient. Interiors/exteriors are a matter of personal opinion, but the GLC is the best looking version of the C class. It's also priced very well -- in Australia, a GLC 220d is close to the X1 25i in pricing, and the standard features of the M-B means that's what you should cross-shop against the X1.
While I have an X1 on order, due March, I haven't ruled the GLC out yet.

I haven't driven the GLC. Watched a review where it was said it drives like a Tank. Don't know what the reviewer would say about the X1, that's why I would like a side by side comparison.

I'd recommend you go and have a test drive of the GLC. Better still, test drive both on the same day. Ultimately, your opinion and reactions to each count for much more than any reviewer, especially in the case of SUVs, where they usually start off with a "truck-like" bias, relative to the sports cars they prefer to test. My 2 cents: the GLC is a good steer for what it is, but it's no C class coupé; nor is the X1 a M135i. But then, why expect that?

You do realize that neither of those are Japanese, right?

I also have a X1 on order (delivery late next week hopefully) I test drove a GLC250 (weekend loan) and must say I much preferred the X125i to drive (be it only for a weekend too). The X1 felt much more agile, quicker and just as roomy. Don't get me wrong, the GLC is a very nice quality machine. The interior expresses quality and luxury. The exterior looks a little overgrown B Class to me. Having owned Mercs before, If the new X1 X-line 125i wasn't as good as it is, I would have seriously considered a GLC. If you add all the extras onto the GLC required to match the X1 X-line 125i it is around $A17,000 or more. It also then incurs higher Lux tax value when the final price is set. (better for the diesel) X1 Xline125i is A$59,900 plus D/D and on-roads. GLC250 is A$69,998 plus D/D and on-roads + extras eg: If you want the Heads up display on the Merc it requires adding the sun roof package in at A$3,600. LED lights are also a big extra. Upgrade to 19in wheels A$2,400 (AMG + A$5,500) One complaint that I and others who have considered the GLC is that the protruding sloped side sill was useless (no foot hold) so it made it very awkward to get in out of the vehicle. I discovered that after the first time I got in (the inside of my trouser leg had red dirt swiped on it from the underside lip of the sill). This means that you had to really stretch to get in out if you wanted to avoid that. The Merc dealer advised me that all GLC coming to Australia have that sill (all for the design look I suppose). He says that they can remove both sills and replaced them with a basic sills and a side step for additional cost of approximately A$3,000.00. Decision made |

Yes, I've committed to the X1 25i, too. But for me, the GLC is a much closer run decision, as I'd only bother to get the 220d with the seats package, and I'd actually downsize to 18" wheels with non-RFTs. There's not much price difference between this and the 25i, and I reckon the ride/handling of the GLC is superior to the X1, based on a comparison drive over the same roads. Especially ride, and it's also quieter. The GLC isn't a rocket, but it's "adequate" for the style of vehicle (i.e., no slug with the 9sp 'box). BTW, my M-B dealer said the side-steps could be removed and the standard sills fitted by order at no cost, so I'm not sure what your guy is doing with the $3,000! HUD and panoramic sunroof are "nice to haves" for me; I did like the 360* camera! However, the GLC is barely, if any, more spacious than the X1 --- maybe even smaller in the luggage area. And the killer? June/July delivery at the earliest, and very little enthusiasm to deal on price atm.

Thanks for posting this M Nick - most comprehensive UK review I have seen.
I thought he might mention the cheap quality parcel shelf Also he thinks we all want to buy X5 one day ...even the X1 is sometimes too big for the lanes and carparks where I live ! |

This is a very good review from the female point of view.
In January Oxford BMW had an X3 parked in front of the new X1 for the public to do a direct comparison and as one would expect, they are very different in many respects. I liked the rear storage area and the fact that you can move rear seats backwards and forwards. The lady makes comments about sitting high up as in other SUV's. This might be so vs other competition. However, when compared to the X3, you sit quite a bit lower and for me it is a deal breaker. The new X1's roofline is quite a bit lower as well. If you specify many toys on the new X1, the price is comparable to an X3. |

It passed Rebecca's banana test. That's all anyone needs to know.
Seriously though, after 4.5 months of driving, I agree with all her points. Tyre noise is my only complaint. Event hough mine is 18" + RFTs, unlike the test car (19"), I still find the noise a bit too much for a BMW. It's very quiet on new road surfaces. But that's just 5% of all UK roads. It's a compromise that I'm "OK" with, considering the huge cargo space you get without the spare tyre under the boot floor. |

Unfortunately not: I've got the emergency spare, and there is not enough room above it for the extra width of a real wheel (Which I'd have preferred). When you dump the RFTs I'd suggest you check on the noise of the ones you're planning to use as replacements. The standard Pirelli P7 non-RFTs mine came with are very noisy on some road surfaces (I'm currently using Michelin CrossClimates on 17" wheels, which are much quieter). In the EU tyres now have to be labelled with their drive-by noise, and there are plenty of reviews about.
