This issue just happened to me!
Occurred to me. I have extended warranty. I first pointed out an issue with the sunroof back in 2019 to BMW dealership. Vehicle was under new car 4 yr warranty. Dealership informed me at that time that the issue was not reproducible!
Shade rarely used. Warp forward to 5/2022 and sagging issue happening. Now car not under new car warranty but under BMW platinum warranty. With this warranty, this issue is not covered (but would have been covered under new car warranty). Left a very bad taste in my mouth as issue was reported but dealership could not reproduce! I file a complaint with NHTSA. Additionally I contacted BMW North America. They informed me that there was nothing they could do and to try and go back to dealership (something abut being separate entities !). I contacted dealership and they quoted me $2500.00 for repair! I am still pursuing this issue, but I will not get it repaired for $2500.00. I will side on removing shade and darkly tinting moon/sun roof glass. |

I am planning to just have the sunroof tinted to keep away heat and cold. Hopefully tint provide that. I was thinking of replacing it myself but appears to be quite tedious.

Finally happened to my 2016 X1 today. Couple of weeks ago, heard a crackling noise and the sunroof shade stripped slightly from one end and started sagging a little bit. Today I tried to open it and the whole shade stripped off on one side, the other side is intact but it is sagging down to the seats if I try to open it. The motor system underneath is intact.
Is there a cheaper fix for this than the $2500 already mentioned here? I may just have to rip the shade off completely and leave it like that. |

I joined the club a few weeks back. I literally NEVER use this thing. Always leave the sunroof and fabric shade extended out. Only thing I can think of is I often crack the two passenger side windows to get airflow. I think the wind pressure pushed up enough on the fabric to break the glue joint over time. Only the passenger side sags. At least I can kind of get it rolled back up fairly neatly.
Plan is, like others, is to just tint the sunroof windows themselves more. Likely with simple static cling film. |

I joined the same club about 3 weeks ago on a trip to Wales 🏴. One day fine got in the car following morning looking in the rear view and thought that looks strange, passenger side sagging. Only ever have the blind halfway, occasionally have to adjust it as I always use comfort locking folding mirrors etc. Have been following this problem on this blog for several years thinking is this going to happen to me, as I never use the bloody thing and bingo. Not sure l’m going to pay 2k plus, going to visit my independent BMW specialist to see if they have ever dealt with anything similar.
2016 xline with 43k on the clock this shouldn’t happen to a seven year old BM very disappointed about this, otherwise it’s been a great vehicle only had the usual EGR recall issues. Anyone in the UK 🇬🇧 found a reasonable cost fix for this, no franchised dealership is getting 2k of mine. |

I found a guy on FB who successfuly replaced the headliner. Here is his post:
"I took the panels out and carried them to a shop that does headliners. Putting them back in seems to be the pain. I should have paid attention to where I was before I moved the panel holders manually to get them out. It appears to be in the retracted position though." Seems like it can be done but I still keep my shade rolled in to prevent the inevitable as my X Line is a 65 plate at 70k. |

Update, visited my local independent today, and better than what I expected. They have done a few of these not many as most people bulk at the cost, but I’m really going to consider this. Quoted 1k Inc parts & Vat. Just wanted to step back and think about it. Quote based on 7 hours labour and blind cartridge parts £257. If anyone’s interested independent is based in the West Midlands.

Hi feel for you as this shouldn’t happen to a premium brand car. As previously mentioned mine is a 2016 vehicle. Reading previous posts it has also happened to newer vehicles. You won’t get any assistance from BMW passed 5 years old. In further update I visited my local Rybrook dealer in Worcester last week, and surprisingly although they were reluctantly to quote without booking the vehicle in to the workshop for investigation they quoted £1137 Inc parts and labour to replace the blind. Mine still works but hangs down on the offside. It is a weakness in all BM models fitted with pano roofs. I would say try your local dealer although not cheap 1k plus it’s half I was expecting. I still haven’t decided if I’m going to have mine replaced 🤔

Well Shiiiiii
2015 with 65K, and mine has joined the fail club.
Mine was a snap noise and the rear panel became stuck. If I push the front panel in with the rear panel, when I close the shade, the front will come into closed position. I can manipulate the rear section to close also, with assistance to the motor. I don't think mine has anything to do with the liner. It feels like a clip that holds it to the runner snapped. $2850 is the estimate for me. It is leave them closed, or if I open the glass, I have to leave it glass only, or climb in the back seat and futz with the panels. BS for just out of warranty. (I had 7yr/70k) |

Sorry to have to welcome you to this club.
There doesn’t seem to be a right or wrong way in what you do, open/close or how often it is used. Atmospherics and humidity do seem to play a part over time. I was chatting to a family friend who is an experienced auto engineer across many manufacturers, and the first thing he said to me was yes BMs and Audi VW brands it’s a too often occurring issue with pano fabric roof blinds. Unfortunately no easy fix complet roof liner out to remove the whole sunroof assembly to access the cartridge in the rear of the assembly. Cost in the uk using BM dealer is in the region £1150 cheaper than the comparable price in the US. Haven’t decided if I’m going to have mine done just can’t bring myself to spend over 1k on a seven year old motor. Had mine fully open for the last three months during hot weather and not mist it at all. Happy motoring |

2016 X1 sunshade roller.
My 2016 X1 has 19k miles on it. I rarely used the sunshade and the only time I did this summer the fabric came off.
The BMW dealer in Seattle is quoting me $3,078! I'm going to report it to NHTSA at: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/ BMW's are suppose to be premium cars. Mine is a 2nd car, so is garaged and gets little use. And at 7 yrs with 19,000 miles on it, it is literally falling apart in my garage. Every time I take it in to get the oil changed there is another odd large $ repair. LEMOM!!! |

Hi I have posted on this thread several times. Talking to my local independent specialist this is a weakness not only BMWs but other premium brands fitted with this type of moonroof.
I to have a 2016 20d Xline now with 50000m, it sounds to me you are frustrated quite rightly so, but I would say that my car is far from being a “lemon” and I’ve had more than my fair share of EGR recalls. I do currently have an outstanding EGR recall. Don’t loose sight that we are talking about a vehicle that is now 7 years old and thing’s deteriorat. |

My 2015 shade also failed in 2021 at 50k km. Contacted my local BMW and they asked 1k for the part. I found an independent shop, and he asked for $600 for the original part and $450 for the subsidiary, including labor. I preferred the subsidiary because he told me that they use the same glue and you never know when you will win the lottery. I regret the choice because it feels like the original part had a thicker shade.
When I saw what he did, I realized that when you go to an independent dealer, you should find someone reliable since all your side airbags will be exposed to theft. He removed all side and top fabrics/covers to replace the shade. It took him 2 days to replace since he was working alone. He told me that you should never open the windows at moderate to high speed in summer unless the shade is retracted. Also, it is best to leave it as it is before cooling. |

I ripped the shield off as the glue on the passanger side failed, and it also caught in the rail one time when I tried to open it, after that I just sent the empty frame all the way back, better overhead view, lol.
