Thanks for the insights SCOTT. It is encouraging to hear that BMW is at least experimenting with performance UKL offerings. While the FWD vs. RWD debate will always be there, if they can pull off something similar to what Mercedes is doing with the A/CLA/GLA 45 then it at least keeps the portfolio interesting for enthusiasts.
Let's face it, Audi has been very successful with the RS3, TT RS, now the RS Q3. I think BMW can do as good a job if not better with the transverse small car layout. It's going to be interesting to see whether Audi keeps that I5 alive (it certainly has lots of love and heritage), or if they eventually just build a higher output I4 like Mercedes did with the M133. With the proposal for the M2 there will not be a radical increase in output , everything will closely mirror the 1er M Coupe to be memorable and not just another high performance car.
Transferring this into a small compact SAV like the X1 has the advantage of appealing to customers who want a high performance compact SAV. One thing is certain is that this segment is happening as witnessed by the arrival of the Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG and Audi RSQ3. The new X1 which will be launched in mid-2015 is reminiscent but not 100% exact as this rendering. The front is kind of similar.

IF Scotts predictions come true and M2/X1M share the engine, it will be a 4cyl. most likely based on the B48. Since it seems that 500ccm is fixed as cylinder displacement that would mean that upcoming M2 will get per litre power output like A45 AMG - roughly 180hp/litre ... but maybe a more refined forced induction system with better throttle response ... hopefully The overall package (weight/balance) would be promising for sure. |

i hate the idea of a FWD BMW but!!!!
from these spy pictures, the profile of the car is looking promising, even with heavy camo on still, its already looking better then the current X1 in my opinion |

I would not buy a BMW with FWD, period. I can just get a Matrix.
edit: I guess BMW is taking over the Matrix market with its discontinuation. Last edited by KevN27; 02-18-2014 at 12:22 PM.. |

Autobild get mutually closer with new BMW X1 Rendering.
In some markets, including the North American market. The F48 X1 is going to be mutually xDrive only. This rendering is very close indeed. The front is very similar , with a dynamic sweep of the headlights. A feature on the next generation 7er , 5er and new X7. And although it is shown as the M Sport in this render. The front facia aligns with the new X family signature but looks more sporty to appeal to younger customers. The rear incorporates typical BMW L-shaped units that wrap around the exterior X3-like. The shape and character sculpture on the render conforms to what is hidden underneath camouflage and vacuumed plastic panelling on the current prototype. The kicked-up hofmeister kick and rising glasshouse is carried over , highlight more by the dynamic sweep downwards of the roofline to highlight a more sportier profile than before. The new X1 launches next Summer and will premiere at the 2015 IAA and launches early 2016. The X1 will be built in Leipzig , Shengyang and a new facility in Brazil. As a first for the Chinese market there will be an X1L a long wheelbase model for greater passenger comfort. Engines will range from a three cylinder to a 300+PS four cylinder. Both petrol and diesel will be offered. A plug-in hybrid eDrive model will also be available. The interior will offer greater leg room especially for rear passengers and a new dash that fits between the new X5 and Active Tourer with surfaces and layers. One year later will be the next X family member - The BMW X2 available for the first time as a 3dr and 5dr.

The X1 will be available with FWD in some markets.
The North American market will be xDrive only.
