Collision avoidance nearly caused accident!

Driving into London last Sunday and third in the queue at traffic lights. Lights change and we all move off slowly but the little red car pops up as I'm closing on the car in front but still going slow so no problem. Next thing the car slams the brakes on and had the now irate van driver behind me not been awake, he'd be parked on my back seat! At no time was there any chance of me hitting the car in front and I didn't feel the need to apply the brakes myself due to the fact that first car in the queue was speeding up. I did make a futile attempt to apologise to the van driver but he was too busy showing me why I was going to go blind and grow hair on the palms of my hands, amongst other things.

You can adjust the sensitivity in idrive, I have ours set to medium as suggested by our SA as the most sensitive setting is too responsive...

That was too ironic from the driver behind you, being a van-ker himself

That's what worries me with all these driving AIDS ..... Try exposing that to an insurer..... That's one of the reasons I didn't get the traffic stop go option

Then you must have been very close to the car in front and not have been feathering the brakes. Ours is set to medium and although I've had the symbol come up in the HUD it's never braked for me l, as I've generally had my foot on the brake pedal in those situations. My wife has had one scenario where it applied the brakes and said it was a bit of a shock having the car suddenly brake...

I have to say that in the last 2 months of driving in heavy town traffic I've never had the car apply the brakes for me. I sometimes get the initial warning of just the red car symbol coming up when weaving between gaps in parked cars to let others past, but never has the car braked automatically. I guess it's possible that something confused the camera system in your case, or you were just very close and the car wasn't "comfortable" with it

As far as I know, it ONLY brakes early if there is positive or zero change in acceleration in relation to the object in front (e.g. you're accelerating more than the car in front, coasting downhill or are not slowing down for whatever reason, the car in front is slowing down significantly more than you, etc.).

If you are slowing down (by either lifting off the throttle or gently applying brakes) it won't kick in until the very last second. It's so late in fact that BMW keeps getting one of the worst scores in the IIHS, Euro NCAP and ADAC tests. It's probably why BMW calls it collision mitigation system and not collision "avoidance" like nearly every other manufacturer. Sneaky. But smart.

I've been driving my car for a year now and auto-brake has not yet kicked in. The visual and audible warnings work as intended.

Assuming you didn't have positive acceleration, keep an eye on it and if happened again, get it checked or recalibrated.

I think that I realised that red car symbol turns on a lot more when car is full, 5 people plus luggage in trunk. When I am alone in car in same situations does not activate.
