BMW has several "service indicators"...brake fluid, oil change, brake pads etc...they are not interrelated...and I guess the dealers aren't allowed to look at them all and do the smart thing...you bring it in for a brake fluid flush and they say "your oil change is due 500 miles" so we might as well do that too and save you a trip back here shortly."
So my dealer is good as they do that. I had brake service and they did the oil for the reason you noted. They have always been good about over the 20 years that I have owned BMWs. If it is something that I have to pay they do call. My Indy does the same thing. I would much rather have everything done, within reason of course, at the same time.

in Canada, X1 oil changes are every 12 months or 15,000 Km (~10,000 mi), whichever comes first. The service required alert comes on to screen to keep nagging you (unless you reset it yourself).

Personally, I take my car in for BMW service shortly there after. It's not worth for me to do oil changes myself and get all dirty, buy tools, jack the car, dispose of oil, etc. just to save $50-$70 per year ... a task that I do not enjoy and the savings are peanuts relative to the total cost of ownership.
