iDrive Controller -- new design?
Finally took delivery of the car (xDrive 25i M Sport in MG) on a drizzly Monday morning (so no opportunity to take photos). Work has been a killer lately so no chance to play around too much. Next week promises some relief so will get "busy" then.
One thing I noticed is this new style of iDrive controller: Happy so far -- no rattles or strange noises while on the road. What surprised wife and I yesterday were loud metallic bangs while the car is parked after being driven. I am hoping it's the exhaust cooling down. Surprising as this was loud -- the M3 would have soft, crackling sounds; this one would be one big bang! More and photos to come. |

You get that controller with Pro Nav it's touch sensitive and allows you to write letters on it... Although not tried this yet as our car is RHD and my coordination with my left hand isn't great! One neat trick is you can adjust things like bass level by sliding your finger across the controller without having to physically enter into the function by clicking on it

The loud bang was disconcerting for me too. First time I heard it I jumped and thought something broke! But that seems to have settled after a few weeks and some longer drives to run heat cycles through exhaust system. Probably expansion and contraction of the new parts.

I have also had the quite loud bangs after stopping - I must admit I thought it was perhaps the brake discs cooling (although I am only less than two weeks in and so have been very gentle on the brakes) - I will pay more attention but I also hope it is settling down

In the "Post Pictures of your F48 X1" thread, I also noticed that the controller dial itself of the non-Pro iDrive is also different (looking at f80's interior/last photo). Quote:

Wow very observant about the iDrive controller! It is indeed different from mine, they must have updated that recently. Yours has what appears to be chrome-plastic strips on the sides of the Menu button. And the Media/Radio & Tel/Nav button is changed as you said. I think the buttons were changed to make it easier to tell by feel which button is which without looking down.
Just compared the two very closely, and I reckon the size of the touchpad has increased slightly (the circumference of the top chrome ring now matches the base instead of being inside of the base). Last edited by PF1; 05-10-2016 at 06:30 PM.. |

That looks much nicer and more streamlined. And I suppose less mechanical buttons means less chance of it breaking! So it's not just cosmetics.

Yes, as mentioned, this controller is used with Pro Nav as it is touch sensitive and allows you to write the letters on it with your finger.
I also like that you can adjust selected menu options by sliding your finger across the controller or tapping it. There seems to be too many options on how you can use the different control functions and how the controls work (Touch, voice, alpha numeric etc) but I do like all the tech. The X1 is loaded with some very nice goodies. __________________ |

I got the new style too, I did think it looked different but didn't pick up on the fact that the buttons are now linked

The old buttons were also linked; they just looked different. The new one looks more elegant but time will tell if the new one is easier to use (by touch) and/or less prone to error.

You can clearly see the chrome dividers in-between the buttons. The knob looks slightly bigger as well. But not as big as the Pro version. |

Yeap! Checking the UK approved used website, it looks like it's only available in cars registered in late April onwards. So, that'd be early April builds.
It's just a cosmetic upgrade probably. The old one are also rocker switches. They just look like they're independent buttons. |
