X1 Oil Change
Hi Guys
My F48 X1 18d was recently in for its 1st service at 15000 Km. Brisbane BMW dealer told me they just did a maintenance check on the vehicle. They didn't do any Oil change. When i called them they told me, they will do it in the next service which is due at 27000 Km. Seems bit odd to me. Do I need to do a interim oil change? Dealer quoted me $280. should i do it or wait for the dealer to do it? thanks |

It depends whether you have a service contract or not. BMW uses 'condition-based' maintenance; we had a service at around 15,000km and, like you, were told the oil wasn't changed. However, about 2,000km later ( a month or so), the service indicator came on, the car was booked in (did it all via iDrive) and the oil/filter was changed as part of that — no charge, included as part of our service contract, and about 45 minutes while-you-wait. Slightly inconvenient but I guess that's what condition-based maintenance is!

That (AUS$280) would be around US$212 or GBP£152, which seems (based on UK dealer rates) to be about the expected cost to change the engine oil and filter.

BMW has several "service indicators"...brake fluid, oil change, brake pads etc...they are not interrelated...and I guess the dealers aren't allowed to look at them all and do the smart thing...you bring it in for a brake fluid flush and they say "your oil change is due 500 miles" so we might as well do that too and save you a trip back here shortly."

Oil Change
Mate,
My wife also has F48, 25i X1, purchased from Brisbane BMW. Oil change interval is 2 years (BMW), but also based on mileage (condition based) I replace oil at 12 months, 2 years is too long especially with Direct Injection Diesel engines, I replace 12 month also for petrol. Also depends on how long you intend to keep the vehicle. There are lots of differing opinions on this topic, but 12 months replacement cost is a small price to pay for extended engine reliability. If your `handy` replace yourself for cost of oil & filter. If you ask the SA's at Brisbane BMW they will tell you the grade of oil and brand; you don't have to buy BMW branded oil, its either Castrol or Shell LL04 (For Diesel) and purchase filter from spares. SA Matthew Hayden is very helpful and approachable at BBMW - mention my name, inmail me if you like. Cheers.. Quote:

Hey Mate
Thanks for the info. My SA is Rakesh. I went to him and he did the oil change for an extra $270. But they used Castrol EDGe Pro 0EX 5W-30. Any way i am planning to do it for 10k afterwards. Thinking about learning it or go to a local mechanic. I do agree 15k is bit too much if u want ur engine to run longer Cheers Last edited by aafarup; 05-09-2018 at 06:25 AM.. Reason: long post |

BMW warns of damage to engine/cat converter if oil is overfilled...here's the warning given in the ISTA Oil Change procedure: Attention! Carry out engine oil service only when the engine is at operating temperature. It is essential to adhere to the exact capacities specified. Overfilling the engine with engine oil will result in engine damage. NOTE "Too much engine oil can damage the engine or the catalytic converter. There is a risk of property damage. Do not add too much engine oil. When too much engine oil is added, have oil level corrected at the dealers service center or other qualified service center or repair shop." That's great advice, but how are you to know if "too much oil is added" since the "electronic oil level sensor"...has NO ability to warn of too much oil in the engine! How expensive could that be?....On a $40K+ vehicle...It's just Bmw's current US position...probably brought abou by the large % of "3 years and out" leases and the fact that a very high % of dealer profits come from their service department...BMW now thinks all owners' involvement with the their BMW's should go no further than "gas it up, make the payment and drop the car off at your dealer if anything else is needed".
Wasn't always the case...I had an '89 535i and the owners' manual gave a good deal of maintenance info..implying some involvement with the vehicle beyond driving on the owners' part. |

My first dealer service(18.5k mile) cost £245.00, a bit steep for what they do really.
I serviced the car in between(9.5k miles) and it cost £70 for BMW oil filter and Castrol Edge 0-30 LL04 oil, I will continue to do this and also do the same on our Cooper F55. As a note BMW oil is now shell, when I used Castrol I noticed the engine is nosier, this was apparent on the Mini also, weirdly! I've always believed in yearly services, having seen the inside of the brother inlaws E93 330i, its in a shocking state!!! |

Unfortunately, that's the guide for the previous model X1.
Instructive as a general guide but not specific to the F48

All they did was engine oil and filter and brake fluid.

I used to work for a lab services company called Intertek which did oil condition monitoring. The experts there reconned 10,000 miles between oil changes is a good rule of thumb. After that oil begins to degrade, adversely effecting ware and performance. Oil change is a very easy job for a DIY mechanic, and for around £70 it's worth the investment if like me you plan to keep your car a while.
