After a few 'powertrain' errors on the dashboard that were related to EGR valve issues, I decided to take it out and give it a clean. Alas, no more errors for 6 months until today. Rather than cleaning it again I'm going to replace it with a new valve - so hopefully it will last longer than 6 months!
I'm wondering if I need to set the valve into 'service mode' before replacing the new one (this mode contracts the valve by 20% allowing insertion) Now I didn't have to do this when I cleaned the old valve - I just put it back in but I've read a new one would break if I did this.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks all.

Just a thought, but have you checked if your car us subject to the new BMW recall action? Our car is booked in and I was advised that it is for a new EGR cooler. Reading on other forums, this is a new item and does not fit the existing EGR valve, so apparently this gets replaced as well.
Might be worth a check before going to the time and expense of fitting the item yourself:

Hope this may help
