For Americans, who only received the current X1 last year, it may seem way early to see a next gen X1 prototype, but here it is. As the current X1 has been in production in Europe since 2009, the next generation model should come in 2015-2016.
On the outside, the F48 X1 adopts a brawnier and stockier look, owing to a significantly shorter front end, shortened overhangs, and a taller and more upright greenhouse.
The next X1 will make the switch from RWD to FWD by riding on BMW's FWD "UKL" platform, which will also underpin the next 1 Series and MINIs. However, like the current X1, the next generation model should also be offered with AWD transmission. The switch to FWD will allow for better packaging, less costly production and more interior space.
