BMW X1 interior photos.

Original post 8/15/14:

We just got the first camouflage-free look at the next BMW X1's front fascia (minus headlights) during hot-weather tests in the California desert.

Up until now, all X1s have had their entire front fascias covered in plastic panels, hiding all signs of its true front-end design treatment. Those panels impede airflow, however, so the test team wanted to get an accurate reading on the cooling performance of the production front-end in the 120-degree heat. They thought they could get away with a quick, camo-free run....but then they saw the camera pointed at them. The tester quickly threw a U-turn and headed back to base to reapply the camouflage, but it was too late. The result is the first look at the front-end character of the new, front-wheel-drive BMW X1, fully revealing its grille and front bumper design.

As with the rest of the car's proportions, the new F48 X1 entire front fascia looks more sport-utility (and less sport wagon-ish) than the current X1 (E84). The high hood cutline of the current X1 has also been abandoned and now joins the upper kidney grilles, a trend that seems to be consistent with future upcoming models (same for the G11 7 Series). Comparison photos can be seen below.

The F48 X1 will also make a departure from the current X1 by making the switch from RWD to FWD. It's been built on BMW's FWD "UKL" platform and should be offered in both FWD and AWD models. The UKL platform will also underpin the next generation 1 Series.

Why the switch to FWD? Typically, FWD allows for better packaging, less costly production and more interior space.

There are rumors that the X1 will be xDrive only in some markets, including for North America. Engines will range from 3 to 4 cylinders.

The new X1 may have its premier next Summer (2015), followed by an auto show debut in the Fall and a market launch in early 2016. It's rumored to be joined by a BMW X2 approximately one year later.
